Reach over the door and open the latch from outside

Outward-opening doors hide a weakness: the latch and handle are reachable from the gap at the hinge or top edge. The Traveler Hook, also known as a Shrum tool, is the slim hook made for exactly that. You feed it through the gap, catch the lever handle or latch, and release it from the wrong side. It is a staple of physical penetration testing for good reason.

How it works

Feed it through, hook the handle, let it go

On an outward-opening door there is usually enough gap to pass the thin hook through near the latch. You guide the tip onto the inside lever or the latch itself, then pull so the mechanism releases and the door opens toward you. The long reach is what lets you work handles that sit well inside the frame.

Many modern latches add a dead latch, a small plunger beside the main bolt that resists shimming. The Traveler Hook gets around that by going for the handle or latch directly rather than the bolt face.

Questions

Quick answers from the LockPickWorld bench

What is a Shrum tool?

Another name for the traveler hook: a long, slim hook used to reach through a door gap and operate the inside handle or latch of an outward-opening door.

Why outward-opening doors?

They expose a gap near the latch and handle, so the hook can reach the mechanism. Inward-opening doors usually call for a shim or shove-knife instead.

Does it beat a dead latch?

It can. Rather than shimming the bolt a dead latch guards, the hook reaches the handle or latch itself and sidesteps the problem. The exact door still decides the outcome.

Is it beginner friendly?

The idea is simple, the feel takes a little practice. Try it on your own outward-opening door to learn how the hook tracks to the handle.

The reach that outward-opening doors do not expect

When the latch sits just out of reach, the Traveler Hook bridges the gap. Feed it through, find the handle, and let the door come to you.
