In most US states, electric lock pick guns are legal to own for locksmiths, security professionals, and hobbyists. However, laws vary by state and locality. Some states require locksmith licensing to possess pick guns. We recommend checking your local regulations before purchasing. Possession with intent to commit a crime is illegal everywhere.

Electric pick guns work on standard pin tumbler locks, which includes most residential and commercial cylinder locks - in fact, it'll open 90% of residential locks. They're usually less effective (or ineffective) against dimple locks, disc detainer locks, and lever locks etc. That said, a quality EPG like the Kronos or Machina will open the vast majority of locks you'll encounter in real-world residential situations - which makes them perfect if your business involves residential door locks.

Most people can open their first lock within 15-30 minutes of unboxing. The fundamental technique - correct tension pressure - is the same skill that takes months to develop with manual picks. With an EPG, you'll develop that feel in hours rather than months. Expect to be confidently opening most standard locks within a week of regular practice. That being said, we do recommend you buy a quality (normal) lock pick set as well, and a guide so that you understand why it works - it's important you learn enough to resolve lock-related issues down the line.

We highly recommend practicing on dedicated metal training locks rather than locks in actual use. A repinnable metal practice lock lets you start with 2 pins and gradually increase difficulty. Avoid using acrylic/clear practice locks with EPGs, the vibrating needles can quickly wear down plastic shells. Metal cutaway locks are ideal for EPG training. The difference comes down to engineering precision, motor quality, materials, and reliability. Premium EPGs like the Kronos use higher-quality motors with tighter tolerances, better vibration patterns, superior needle materials, and more robust construction. Cheap EPGs often use brittle needles that can snap inside locks, weak motors that burn out, and poor quality control. For professionals, a failed tool means a failed job - the extra cost is an investment in reliability.
