"I've tested every electric pick gun on the market. The difference between a quality EPG and a cheap import isn't just performance, imagine opening a lock in 10 seconds or spending 10 minutes fighting a tool that's working against you - clearly the pick gun is better. This guide shares everything I've learned from picking thousands of locks."
What Is an Electric Lock Pick Gun?
An Electric Lock Pick Gun (EPG) is an automated lock picking tool that rapidly vibrates a needle inside a pin tumbler lock. This vibration transfers kinetic energy to the pins, causing them to jump momentarily to the shear line; the same principle as manual picking, but executed hundreds of times per second.
The result? Locks that might take an experienced picker several minutes to open manually can often be defeated in seconds with the right EPG.
EPGs are essential tools for professional locksmiths, security consultants, and law enforcement. They're also increasingly popular with locksport enthusiasts who want to understand how different locks respond to various attack methods.
Why Professionals Choose Electric Pick Guns
⚡ Speed
Open most standard pin tumbler locks in 5-30 seconds. What takes minutes with manual picks takes seconds with an EPG.
🎯 Consistency
Once you learn the technique, results are repeatable. No bad days where your touch is off. The EPG tool delivers consistent performance.
💪 Reduced Fatigue
For locksmiths doing multiple call-outs daily, an EPG saves your hands and wrists from the repetitive strain of manual picking.
📈 Learning Accelerator
EPGs teach tension control fundamentals quickly. Master tension with an EPG, then transfer that skill to manual picking.
"Unbelievably easy. I spent a couple hours looking for locks to practice on. There was not one it would not open in under one minute, most under 5! The quality and finish would be comparable to a high-end Mercedes. You can really see and feel the quality."
How to Use an Electric Lock Pick Gun
Using an EPG effectively is surprisingly simple once you understand the fundamentals. Here's the process:
Insert Tension
Apply light rotational tension to the plug using a tension wrench. Too much pressure and the pins won't have the freedom to jump.
Insert Needle
Slide the EPG needle into the keyway, positioning it so the tip sits beneath the pins. Don't force it. Let it rest naturally.
Activate & Sweep
Press the trigger and slowly sweep the needle from back to front. The vibrating needle will strike the pins upward.
Feel for the Open
Maintain light tension throughout. When pins set at the shear line, the plug will turn. Feel for that moment and complete the rotation.

How to Choose the Right Electric Pick Gun
Frequently Asked Questions
Are electric lock pick guns legal to own?
In most US states, electric lock pick guns are legal to own for locksmiths, security professionals, and hobbyists. However, laws vary by state and locality. Some states require locksmith licensing to possess pick guns. We recommend checking your local regulations before purchasing. Possession with intent to commit a crime is illegal everywhere.
Will an EPG open any lock?
Electric pick guns work on standard pin tumbler locks, which includes most residential and commercial cylinder locks - in fact, it'll open 90% of residential locks. They're usually less effective (or ineffective) against dimple locks, disc detainer locks, and lever locks etc. That said, a quality EPG like the Kronos or Machina will open the vast majority of locks you'll encounter in real-world residential situations - which makes them perfect if your business involves residential door locks.
How long does it take to learn to use an electric pick gun?
Most people can open their first lock within 15-30 minutes of unboxing. The fundamental technique - correct tension pressure - is the same skill that takes months to develop with manual picks. With an EPG, you'll develop that feel in hours rather than months. Expect to be confidently opening most standard locks within a week of regular practice. That being said, we do recommend you buy a quality (normal) lock pick set as well, and a guide so that you understand why it works - it's important you learn enough to resolve lock-related issues down the line.
What's the difference between the Kronos and the Machina?
The Multipick Kronos is German-engineered and considered the gold standard among professionals. It's battle-tested, the most refined EPG available with 135 reviews backing it up. The Dangerfield Machina offers comparable performance with some unique features like the intelligent charger LED battery display and USB-C battery charging. Both will open the same locks; the Machina offers a slight edge in build, brand quality and refinement, while the Kronos delivers German engineering.
Do I need a practice lock to learn with an EPG?
We highly recommend practicing on dedicated metal training locks rather than locks in actual use. A repinnable metal practice lock lets you start with 2 pins and gradually increase difficulty. Avoid using acrylic/clear practice locks with EPGs, the vibrating needles can quickly wear down plastic shells. Metal cutaway locks are ideal for EPG training. (And buy the 190 illustration lock picking book!)
Why are some EPGs so much more expensive than others?
The difference comes down to engineering precision, motor quality, materials, and reliability. Premium EPGs like the Kronos use higher-quality motors with tighter tolerances, better vibration patterns, superior needle materials, and more robust construction. Cheap EPGs often use brittle needles that can snap inside locks, weak motors that burn out, and poor quality control. For professionals, a failed tool means a failed job - the extra cost is an investment in reliability.
