The thin card that slips a latch, not the credit-card myth
You have seen people fumble a credit card against a door in films. Real latch bypass uses mica: a set of five thin, springy shim cards that slide into the gap between the door and frame, find the angled face of the spring latch, and press it back so the door opens. Mica flexes into tight gaps a stiff card never could, which is why this is a genuine locksmith tool rather than a party trick.

Find the latch, depress it, walk through
Slide a shim into the gap above or beside the latch, angle it onto the curved face of the bolt, and push. The latch retracts against its spring and the door swings free. Different shims in the set let you match the stiffness and reach to the door and gap in front of you.
This works on sprung latch bolts. It will not move a thrown deadbolt or a latch that has been deadlocked, so read the door before you start.

Quick answers from the LockPickWorld bench
Why mica and not a credit card?
Mica is thinner and springier, so it slides into tight door gaps and snaps onto the latch face where a stiff plastic card just jams or bends.
Will it open any door?
Only doors with an exposed spring latch that is not deadbolted or deadlocked. If the latch is locked solid, a shim cannot move it.
Does it leave damage?
No. Done properly it is completely non-destructive, which is exactly why locksmiths reach for shims before anything harsher.
Is it hard to learn?
The motion is simple once you feel the latch give. Practise on a door you own so you learn where the latch sits and how much push it takes.
Carry the locksmith's quiet way in
When the latch is sprung and the door is not deadlocked, a mica shim is faster and cleaner than anything else. Slip it in, find the latch, and you are through.
