Slow-made, on purpose

How we make a lock pick you can feel

Refined over 20+ years of locksport, we craft picks that talk to you through the pins, so you open more locks than before. Responsiveness and feedback. To get there, our picks are made slow, on purpose.

Our recipe

The feel comes from getting everything right at once, and refusing to cut corners on any of them.

The steel

Starship-grade 301 stainless

We cut from Starship-grade 301 stainless, the same grade SpaceX builds Starship from. It shrugs off rust, stays tough under thousands of cycles of daily use, and rebounds like nothing else when it is put to the picking tasks we made it for.

The temper

Spring back for feel

Steel on its own is just metal. It comes in an endless list of varieties, most of them wrong for this specialism. Ours is cold tempered so it flexes harder under tension and snaps back dead straight, job after job. That optimal spring is where the feedback lives, bend before break, the Dangerfield feel over a dampened, rubbery response.

The finish

A 48-hour slow polish

This is the part we refuse to rush. We could buzz a tip smooth in seconds like everyone else. Instead each pick is polished slowly over the better part of two days, until the tip is glass-smooth and snag-free. A rough tip catches and lies to you while picking. A slow-polished tip lets you feel every pin set and click.

The build

Full-tang, hand-finished

We prefer steel that runs the full length of the pick in one piece. No weld, no glued joint, no plastic holding it together. Every pick is hand-checked before it is finished.

"A rough pick lies to you. A slow-polished one tells you the truth." Chris Dangerfield, founder
Why it matters

What you feel in your hand

Put the four together and you get the only thing that really matters: feedback. A Dangerfield pick is a stiffer, tempered tool with a slow-polished tip that tells you exactly what the pins are doing. You'll feel the set. You'll feel the binding. Stop guessing and start picking. That's why a beginner improves faster on a properly made pick, and why someone with years of experience can open by feel in the dark.

Steel over titanium

We chose quality and purpose, not hype

Titanium picks are a clever marketing story. Softer than steel, they flex too much and tell you less, and you pay a premium for the privilege. Dangerfield chooses the pick that reads pins. That is a properly tempered steel pick, crafted the way we prefer.

The difference is earned

Why pickers stay with us

100,000+pickers and counting
8,800+reviews

Those numbers didn't come from cutting corners. People feel the difference the first time they pick up one of our sets, and they come back for the next one. Making them this way, slow and properly, is the whole point.
